Otterbein to Host Intercollegiate Dressage Association National Championships

Event to be held at Knowlton Center for Equine Science on April 25-26

April 13, 2015

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University will host the 2015 Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) National Championships on April 25-26 at the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Equine Science, 600 N. Spring Rd.

IDA is a college-level team sport where individuals ride an unfamiliar horse through a predetermined pattern and are judged on accuracy, obedience of horse, and harmony between horse and rider.

Otterbein’s dressage team qualified to compete at the 2015 IDA National Championships at their show on April 11 and 12, where they were named the High Point Team for Region E. Four individual riders also qualified to compete at the National Championships: Kelsie Bricker, Sharlee Lowe, Kailey Giancola and Ashley Jungclas. Otterbein’s team finished as the reserve champion team at the 2014 IDA National Championships, where Coach Kari Briggs also received the Teresa L. McDonald Coach of the Year Award.

This prestigious IDA event will attract in excess of 400 competitors, spectators, and patrons. Individual Championships will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, and the Intercollegiate Dressage Association Team Championship will be held from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. The event will be streamed live online; a link will be available at www.otterbein.edu.

In addition to the dressage team’s outstanding season, Otterbein’s hunt seat team won the Region 2 championship for Zone 6 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). This win qualified them to compete at the Zone 6 finals, where they finished as the reserve champion team. They will compete next at the IHSA National Championships, held April 30-May 3 at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass. Otterbein also is represented in the Cacchione Cup by junior Mattie Boyd. This prestigious class is reserved for the high point level rider from each region.

The Knowlton Center contains classrooms, staff office space, night caretaker quarters, reception and spectator seating and stalls for 52 horses. It is situated on approximately 70 acres in a pristine setting in the heart of the Westerville residential community, just three miles from Otterbein’s main campus.
