Board Chairman Mark Thresher recognizes the Columbus Foundation

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University Board Chairman Mark Thresher, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Nationwide, acknowledged the increase in major gift activity, including three grants housed through the Columbus Foundation, at the winter meeting of the University’s Board of Trustees.

The gifts included a $1 million estate designation from El Doris McFarland; a $600,000 estate grant from the Richard and Glenna Legrand Charitable Fund; and a $250,000 grant from the James A. and Kathleen C. Rutherford Foundation. “We are fortunate to have a strong community foundation in our region. The Columbus Foundation is effective in promoting the power of philanthropy and the community benefits from its good work,” said Thresher.

Within the past two years, Otterbein has received several gift commitments valued at $500,000 or more including $1.5 million from the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation to name its Equine Science Center; $1 million from the Pioneer Fund for scholarships; and $800,000 from the Vida S. Clements Foundation to resurface its stadium playing surface. The list also includes Board of Trustee gifts from Ted and Eileen Huston, Jim and Kathy Rutherford, and President Kathy Krendl and Richard Gilbert.

“Otterbein continues to provide tremendous opportunities for our students. I am grateful that our community partners, our alumni and our trustees are making significant investments toward realizing our goals,” said Thresher. “Otterbein will lead higher education into the 21st century due to these gifts and future commitments from its alumni, friends, donors and community.”
