Westerville, OH — Otterbein University will host a pep rally to celebrate the ground breaking of a track and turf upgrade project at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at Memorial Stadium, 180 Center St. The new artificial field turf at Dwight C. Ballenger Field and a brand new track surface on the McVay Track will culminate a decade of renovations to Memorial Stadium. They will be available for use for the fall 2014 season.
More than 220 donors have contributed approximately $2 million to the project, which will cost $2.1 million.
Otterbein has selected three Ohio-based companies for the projects. The project architects, MSA Architects, and turf manufacturer, The Motz Group, are both based in Cincinnati, and Heiberger Paving of central Ohio is pouring the track.
Otterbein is the first university in central Ohio to use the Crossflex HP synthetic surface, which is a combination of wear-resistant slit-film and monofilament synthetic fibers that ensures both durability and optimal performance.
The entire Otterbein community will benefit from the new, state-of-the-art field turf and track surfaces. More than 500 student-athletes each year will have opportunities to practice and compete at the stadium's updated facilities. Additionally, all students will have access to recreational sports opportunities and special events on the field and track. An expansion of the playing field will allow Memorial Stadium to become the home of not only football and men's lacrosse, but also men's soccer, women's soccer, and women's lacrosse. Improvements to the track surface will allow Otterbein to host its first outdoor track meet since 2007.
