Central Ohio English Learners' Education Collaborative

A National Professional Development Grant
Awarded to
Otterbein University
Funded by the
U.S. Department of Education

COELEC integrates three major initiatives — The COELEC Higher Education Initiative, COELEC Summer-Plus Academy, and COELEC English Learner Career Ladders — in an effort to increase capacity across educational contexts to support the academic needs of English Learners in central Ohio. These initiatives have the potential to directly increase the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)  pedagogical knowledge and skills of 200 educators who teach English Learners (ELs) in preschool through college (PK-16). In addition, the outcomes these initiatives provide are sustainable. The Teacher Education program at Otterbein will be forever transformed by:

  • A redesigned TESOL-focused curriculum that will impact more than 300 future teachers each year,
  • Newly developed skills and strategies for practicing teachers will impact generations of ELs, and
  • Career ladder teaching credential earners will increase the linguistic and cultural diversity of central Ohio’s teaching force.

Save the date!  Coming March 19, 2016

Spotlight On

Fabiola Milla Kimble

First Student Graduates from COELEC Program at Otterbein

Milla Kimble

It didn’t take long for veteran educator Bev Good to recognize that Fabiola Milla Kimble has the heart of a teacher when the two were working in the Westerville City School District a few years ago. Fast forward to 2014, and Good is pleased to report that Milla Kimble has become the first student to complete COELEC’s English Learner Career Ladders program that helps immigrants complete Ohio’s requirements for a teaching credential.
