COELEC Summer Academy 2015
  1. COELEC Higher Education InitiativesHigher Education Initiative (HEI)

    The HEI is designed to:

    • Increase the capacity of teacher education to address the needs of preservice teachers,
    • Develop cultural understanding among teacher education faculty,
    • Engage teacher education faculty in professional development to prepare help preservice teachers to address the academic needs of ELs,
    • Participate in a learning community to integrate systematic instruction of EL skills and strategies into the teacher education preparation courses, and
    • Document processes to embed systematic instruction for ELs in teacher education preparation. 
  2. SPA

    Summer Plus Academy Initiative (SPA)

    The Summer Academy Initiative is designed to increase the capacity of area schools to address the needs of PK-12 ELs.   Priority populations are middle and high school math and science teachers.

    The Summer Plus Academy provides:

    • Instructional strategies to improve content delivery,
    • Content-specific tutoring for ELs, and
    • Financial support for preservice and inservice teachers to earn course credit toward the TESOL endorsement.
  3. COELEC Career Ladder InitiativesCareer Ladder Initiative (CLI)

  4. The Career Ladder Initiative is designed to provide a pathway for adult Central Ohio English Learners (ELs) to pursue a teaching credential.

    The COELEC Career Ladder provides:

    • An academic course pathway from high school to associate degree offering the credential to become an English as a Second Language (ESL) paraprofessional,
    • An academic course pathway from associate degree to a valid Ohio teaching credential,
    • A proposed paraprofessional licensure for the Ohio Board of Regents to consider, and
    • Academic advice and advocacy to ensure student success.

*100% of the contents of COELEC programs were developed under a grant from the Department of Education.  However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the federal government.
