Quiz & Quill Writing Awards & Spring Magazine Submissions

Quiz & Quill Writing Awards
2015 deadline TBA soon

Quiz & Quill encourages all current Otterbein students to submit their work for the 2015 Writing Awards. Submissions will be considered for Writing Awards in each genre by judges who are not directly affiliated with Otterbein. Submissions for Writing Awards will also be considered by QQ staff for publication in the 2015 Spring Magazine.

Writers remain anonymous to the staff and contest judges throughout the selection process. Cash prizes for writing awards will be applied to student accounts at the end of spring semester.

Beginning Fall 2014, Quiz & Quill will accept submissions through Submittable, an online submission management system.

Fiction Writing Awards
Stories must be fictional narratives dealing with any subject. In most cases, stories exceeding 12 double-spaced pages will not be considered for publication in the Spring Magazine, though they will still be eligible to receive a Fiction Writing Award. Students may submit up to two stories.

Poetry Writing Awards
Poems of any length and on any subject are accepted. Students may submit up to three poems.

Dramatic Writing Awards
Plays, screenplays, scenes, acts, monologues, etc. may deal with any topic. We urge writers submitting scenes or acts from longer plays to include a statement providing the background information we need to understand the significance of the scene you have sent. In most cases, scripts exceeding 15 double-spaced pages will not be considered for publication in the Spring Magazine, though they will still be eligible to receive a Dramatic Writing Award. Students may enter up to two submissions in this contest.

Personal Essay Writing Awards
Personal essays must relate to personal responses or experiences and be written in familiar style. This category includes but is not limited to essayistic approaches to memoir, literary journalism, travel writing, nature writing, etc. Strictly academic or scholarly essays should be submitted to Aegis instead of Quiz & Quill. In most cases, essays exceeding 12 double-spaced pages will not be considered for publication in the Spring Magazine, though they will still be eligible to receive an Essay Writing Award. Students may submit up to two essays.

Roy A. Burkhart Awards in Religious Poetry
Poems may be no longer than 50 lines, and should deal with subjects of a spiritual nature. Students may submit up to three poems.

Walter Lowrie Barnes Historical Short Story Awards
Stories may be submitted by any junior or senior who has attended Otterbein University for at least one year prior to the contest. Each story shall be based on some established incident, fact or phase of American history. Stories must be original and emphasize virtue of citizenship. The historical element of the piece must not be distorted so as to destroy it. In most cases, stories exceeding 12 double-spaced pages will not be considered for publication in the Spring Magazine, though they will still be eligible to receive a Fiction Writing Award. Students may submit up to two stories.

Louise Gleim Williams Newspaper Writing Awards
Each entry will consist of three different news or feature stories that were published in the Tan & Cardinal during the 2014 calendar year. Students may submit only one entry (containing three different articles). This is the only contest requiring submission of hard copies – you should send three clippings, along with your contact information and the dates of publication for each of the articles through campus mail to Shannon Lakanen, Quiz & Quill Faculty Advisor, English Department. Newspaper writing is not eligible for publication in the Spring Magazine.

Louise Gleim Williams Writer’s Award
The Writer's Prize will be awarded each year to the writer of the best of all the first-place winners of the seven contests described above.
