2016 Student Commencement Speaker and Runner-Up Contestants

It's Otterbein tradition that we have a student commencement speaker contest. Although there can only be one winner, the contestants' speeches were excellent and we wanted to give you the opportunity to read not only the chosen speaker's speech, but excerpts from the finalists' speeches as well.

2016 Student Commencement Speaker: Carlie Watson

Carlie WatsonCarlie Watson is a public relations major from Seattle, Washington.

She is actively involved with Central Ohio Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) and has traveled on summer missions with the organization to Clearwater Beach, Florida, and Dominican Republic. She is a member and chaplain of Sigma Alpha Tau sorority and the worship and publicity leader for Otterbein Christian Fellowship.

In her application to be the 2016 student commencement speaker, Watson wrote: “I am eternally grateful for my time here. While it's hard knowing that I'm not going to be living with my best friends, going to class every day, going to the bean to chat with people over coffee, and sitting in the library during finals week while pretending to be productive, I can rest in the truth that I wouldn't be who I am today without my time here at Otterbein.”
