Meet the Dean

Welcome to the home of Otterbein’s University Programs. Our academic programs are diverse and varied, yet they all share an important commitment: to providing you with an opportunity to enrich your educational journey by introducing you to different ways of knowing and to making connections between the different aspects of your experience here.

These programs each have their own unique way of providing this opportunity for intellectual discovery, breadth, and connection. The interdisciplinary majors and minors, such as those offered in environmental studies and women’s studies, afford you a way to more fully understand and tackle important contemporary issues by using an array of approaches that include the humanistic, artistic, and scientific. The honors program offers select students the chance to situate their intellectual interests in a broader interdisciplinary framework as they take courses together and then to dive deep into their own area of specialty through a senior thesis project.

The university programs that are part of our core curricula—the First Year Experience, Integrative Studies, and Senior Year Experience Programs—anchor multi-disciplinary inquiry around one of the most pressing questions of our time: how can we all become aware, informed, ethical, and active global citizens? In these programs, you have the chance to take classes from faculty across the university who will encourage you to see how your entire educational experience, including your major, minor, and core requirements, all fit together. And our Five Cardinal Experiences assure you a place to in your educational experience to develop your leadership potential, engage firsthand in research and creative work, gain experience in professional workplaces, and put the theory learned in the classroom into practice in local and global community settings.

I encourage you to participate in as many of the university programs as you can. Each in its own fashion will enhance and enrich your time here at Otterbein, by deepening and challenging the way you think about yourself and the issues facing our 21st century world.
