Living and Learning in Kasigau, Kenya - July 2012

KenyaThis two week trip invites you to travel with other members of the Otterbein family to eastern Africa with a purpose: to enhance your own life experience and to meet and work with local Kenyans striving to make a difference in their own communities.  

Accompanied by both Otterbein faculty members and local Kenyan guides, you will learn about Kenyan history and culture, observe firsthand wildlife research and management in a region fraught with human-wildlife conflict, and participate in progressive, sustainable community based projects that will improve daily life for those who call the Kasigau home.

Sample Itinerary


*final itinerary will be determined on the ground Travel from Columbus to Nairobi; overnight accommodation in Nairobi.

  • Day 1: Explore Nairobi

    --possible activities include: visits to the Natural History Museum, Karen Blixen Museum, or Ologasaille (a Rift Valley Rift archeological site)
  • Day 2: Travel to Kasigau area
    --drive from the nation’s urban capital south through changing landscape to the Taitia Hills region
  • Day 3: Orientation to Kasigau
--meet our Kasigau hosts; get oriented to the local communities
  • Days 4 & 5: Community Project work in the Kasigau villages
  • Days 6 & 7: Wildlife and Ecotourism
    --activities include game drive in Rukinga Ranch Conservancy and Tsavo National Park; wildlife monitoring and tracking; discussion of ecotourism and human-wildlife issues
  • Days 8 & 9: Community Project work in the Kasigau villages
  • Day 10: Local Cultural Exploration
    --possible activities include a hike up Mount Kasigau that includes natural and local history talks; learning about local crafts such as basket weaving, soap making, or elephant dung paper making
  • Day 11: Day Trip to Mombasa
-- visit Old Town and Fort Jesus Museum
  • Day 12: Kasigau Farewell
  • Day 13: Return to Nairobi for evening flights home

Prices


Prices are inclusive of lodging, meals, admissions, transportation, and gratuities except on day 1 in Nairobi where travelers are responsible for lunch and dinner. Souvenirs, passport visas, and necessary vaccinations are not included. We have figured the costs of the trip as $6609.
