Devonshire - Grace McDaniel

Abstract:
The Devonshire Project is a project that stems from the idea of a students. This student initiated a student council at Devonshire Elementary. The student council (made up of 6 4th- and 5th- graders) are the governing body for school-based activities. The 4 Otterbein Students (students in the Early Childhood Curriculum course) placed at Devonshire complete a 100 hour field placement in which they teach and assume many responsibilities in the classroom. These students, along with their 2 teacher-leaders are working on a culminating project for May, 2008. They will involve over 40 students in a school beautification project. The students will collaborate with Otterbein students, teachers, school staff, and community members to plan and implement the project. In addition, the students and Otterbein students will work to promote Devonshire and the great contributions the students are making to the various constituents in the community.

The goals for the Devonshire Project are to: 1) Increase student leadership skills; 2) increase student awareness of social/community responsibilities; 3) increase community awareness of Devonshire Elementary; and 4) engage students in service-learning projects.

All of the activities will support the Ohio Content Standards.
