In the Eyes of a Child - Karen Robinson

Abstract:
Seven Otterbein Early Childhood Education majors and two Education Department Faculty collaborated to introduce third-graders at East Linden (Columbus Public) Elementary School to the concept of community mapping and scrapbooking. The personalized books were used to increase awareness about the immediate neighborhood surrounding the school as well as to expand verbal and visual literacy. After learning to use digital cameras and digital recorders, students were prompted, by way of the book A Place Called Home by Aminah Robinson, to photograph their school neighborhood. Each student received an 8x8 scrapbook, scrapbook supplies, writing prompt sheets, and developed photographs. With the help of Otterbein students and professors, the children composed their own personalized memoir of their neighborhood walk. Scrapbooks and a Power Point presentation were shared with parents and the community at East Linden Elementary's Family Fun Night on May 29th.
