Northland High School - Patricia Ryan

Abstract:
The relationship between Otterbein University and Northland High School has involved Otterbein students and faculty in a number of various but disparate programs. Otterbein students have served as volunteer English Language Learner (ELL) tutors, volunteer tutors for seniors who did not pass the required-to-graduate Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), assistant band director, assistant director for the spring choral performance, teachers for teen parents regarding early literacy, assistant athletic coaches, Earth Day volunteers, and as consultants for the Principal's Student Leadership Team. These activities arose from the meeting of the Northland Learn and Serve advisory board which met on several occasions throughout the year. Otterbein faculty served on this advisory board, provided leadership for the North Central Evaluation of Northland High School, volunteered to formally critique musical performances.

Evaluation
The OGT tutors were successful. Specific outcomes are noted in the milestones. Twelve ELL students applied to Otterbein for admission for next year. We volunteered tutored for 526 hours. One tutor volunteer tutoring reached 60 hours and the student he tutored passed the OGT and graduated.
