PHED 380 - Patti Wilson

Abstract:
In December 2007 a meeting was held with all teachers and principal at Hawthorne Elementary to survey needs of classroom teachers and students. Various projects were identified. January through March saw the integration of math and movement and the planning and implementation of Hawthorne Muscle Mania a school wide parent and student activity night developed by the third grade classes along with their Otterbein buddies

Partnership and Collaborative Development
  • Avalon Elementary School playground got cleaned and seal-coated (materials donated)
  • All students laid out, marked, and painted 46 diagrams onto a 20,000 square foot playground that will allow for over 100 games/activities to be played
  • Playground now has activities designed for special needs and typical children alike
  • Otterbein students acquired over $800.00 in donated materials and supplies for the painting of the playground from Home Depot and Lowes
Evaluation
The evaluations we conducted took place at the Muscle Mania activity night. The purpose was to see if parents learned activities they might be able to do at home with their children. Of those completing evaluations 90.4% said yes (38/42).

Stories and Successes
My Otterbein students and the Hawthorne students had the opportunity to be filmed and interviewed for the Service-learning documentary. It was wonderful to see how the students focused on their math and movement activities even with cameras in their classrooms. Also to hear my college students responses to questions about what service-learning and this project meant to them.

The Muscle Mania family activity night was attended by at least 100 students and parents and this after the date had to be changed due to another school sponsored event the night before.
