Philosophy Degree Requirements

Below are the requirements for earning a major or minor in philosophy.

B.A. Degree with a Major in Philosophy

Total hours required is at least 180.

Requirements in the Core Curriculum:

Integrative Studies - 50 hrs.
Foreign Language - 10 hrs.
Mathematics - 5 hrs.
It is recommended that Philosophy majors take PHIL 125 to meet the BA Math requirement.
Health and Physical Education Lifestyle Series - 3 hrs.
Senior Year Experience - hrs depend upon course selected

Requirements in the major (minimum 45 total hours). At least 15 of the 45 total hours must be taken at the 300/400 level in an Otterbein classroom:

Core Studies (take all of these):

PHIL 125 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 300 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 310 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 400 - 5 hrs.

Value Theory (choose at least one):

PHIL 280 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 320 - 5 hrs.

Metaphysics and Epistemology (choose at least one):

PHIL 330 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 340 - 5 hrs.

Student must take additional electives to reach minimum of 45 total hours with no more than 10 of the electives from among PHIL 100/120/130. At least 15 of the 45 total hours must be taken at the 300/400 level and in an Otterbein classroom.

Minor in Philosophy

Requirements (at least 25 total hours):

PHIL 120 or 125 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 300 - 5 hrs.
PHIL 310 - 5 hrs.
Remaining hours from among any other PHIL courses
