Why are we using Jengo, the Career Center mascot, as the messenger for tips about job searching? Jengo symbolizes the fact that embarking on a job search may often seem like attempting a journey into uncharted jungle territory, full of obscured pathways and unseen risks. But Jengo is also a reminder that there is a support system on campus that can help you cut through the tangle of uncertainty surrounding your first job search.

Before you get started on your journey through the job search jungle, you should know a few facts.

  • Only 1 in 10 successful job candidates will find a job through the internet.
  • 70% - 80% of all available jobs are not advertised.
  • Most interviewers decide in the first 7 seconds if they want to hire a candidate or not.
  • Your academic major and high GPA are frequently less important to employers than excellent communication skills, a "can-do" attitude, and a teamwork mentality.

Are some of these facts new to you? Do you want to learn more so you can be better prepared? These Jengo Says tips have been developed to give you a "fast track" look at what you need to know before you begin. Follow up on these tips by making an appointment with a Career Center staff member to develop an individualized plan for your search.
