1. Determine if your company is publicly held, private or a subsidiary:

LexisNexis Academic 

Click on the "Business" tab and search for the company name. The results will identify if your company is public or private or a subsidiary.

  • Publicly owned Companies sell shares of stock in the company that are traded on various exchanges. They are required to report financial information to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
  • Privately held companies are not required to divulge any information and you will need to search for articles about them in newspapers and magazines.
  • Financial information for subsidiary companies is usually not available, but is merged into the financial information of the parent company.

If your company is publicly held, financial information will be available in:
LexisNexis Academic 
- Search under the "Business" tab for your company and then click on the Financial Information link.

Factiva - Under the "Companies/Markets" green tab choose the white Company tab to search for the company name or ticker symbol.

Mergent Online - includes 11,000 public companies and their SEC filings, financials for 15 years, and Annual Reports.

Thomson One - access to quotes, earnings estimates, financial fundamentals, market moving news, transaction data, corporate filings, ownership profiles and research from industry-leading sources.

Annual Reports are available in:

Mergent Online - many U.S. companies annual reports for the past 7 years. Online  
Company File - a limited number of paper copies of Annual Reports; some are Ohio companies. Company File 2nd floor

If your company is public, private or a subsidiary, articles from magazines, journals and newspapers will be found in:

Business Source Complete - Indexes 4,156 Journals & magazines; 3,252 are full text and 1,644 are peer-reviewed. It includes 17, 651 Company profiles and 17,558 Industry Reports.

 

LexisNexis Academic- full-text articles from national, regional and world newspapers and magazines.

 

Factiva - has the latest news reported in newswires, newspapers from every corner of the globe and general publications like The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Business Week.

 

America's Newspapers - selected full text articles from regional newspapers.

 

Newspaper Source - includes 30 national newspapers and selected full text from 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.

Business Source Complete - Search for an industry and then click on the the Industry Profiles link on the left.

 

LexisNexis Academic  - Search for your company and then look for a link to Hoover's Company Records - In-depth Records on the Snapshot page.

 

Factiva

Mergent Industry Reports are available if you search SC=MIRAUS and (the name of the industry your need).

 

In the search box click the Industry link next to the "Select Factiva Intelligent Indexing" and pick one of the 30 broad industries. Then do a search for your company and the articles retrieved will be about both your company and it's industry.

3. Look for changes in the company's leadership.

    Take time to search for books, periodical articles and Internet information about the leaders of the company and notice any changes in the management.

Mission statements are occasionally posted on company Web pages or may be mentioned in periodical articles. A company such as Honda will have more than one mission statement. Their car and motorcycle manufacturing units and even their dealerships will have different missions.
