Hazardous Materials Spill

The following links can be resourced to find information about a variety of chemicals:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

  • Preplanning is essential when working with chemicals and other hazardous materials.  Know what substances are in your work area and the dangers they present.
  • To report any incidents, contact the Otterbein College Security Department at (614) 823-1222.  Be prepared to provide information regarding:
    • Location and type of spill
    • Injuries
    • Approximate amount of material involved
    • Any identifiable reaction
    • Who had contact with the spilled substance
  • Equipment or processes containing hazardous materials should be halted and the area evacuated.  To minimize contaminating others, remain in the building, move to an upper floor, and await further instructions.
  • Close doors to contain the situation until trained responders arrive or you have knowledge that opening doors or windows to ventilate the area is appropriate.
  • Account for everyone in the room and compile a list of all individuals who may have been contaminated.
  • If direct contact is made with a spilled, hazardous substance, contact the Otterbein College Security Department at (614) 823-1222.

If you have any questions or would like additional Hazmat training, contact the Chemical Hygiene Officer at (614) 823-3041.
