On February 7, 2009, the Otterbein College Board of Trustees passed a resolution to begin the transition to convert the Security Department to a sworn, law enforcement agency. Current Security Officers have received training and certification through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) and were commissioned as police officers at Otterbein College on February 11, 2009. At present, the Security Department is not acting upon its authority as a police department, but instead focusing on the administrative and legal requirements to successfully complete the conversion. This is tentatively scheduled to occur on July 1, 2010.
The 10 full-time employees of the Otterbein College Security Department provide 24-hour patrols of the entire campus, including parking lots, residence halls, academic/administrative buildings, athletic facilities and surrounding campus properties.
The Security Department maintains a close working relationship with the Westerville Division of Police (WPD) and various state and surrounding local law enforcement agencies.
All officers are equipped with portable radios to directly contact to WPD, if needed. Reports and other critical information are frequently exchanged between the Otterbein College Security Department and WPD. In addition, the Security Department and WPD often work together for major events occurring on campus.
The Security Department is equipped with a radio system that provides for telephone access from each portable radio. Requests for assistance and emergency reports are answered quickly and directly by on-duty Security Department personnel.
In addition to the above-listed information, the Otterbein College Security Department also:
- Issues all permanent and temporary parking decals.
- Gathers and submits crime statistics to the U.S. Department of Education, in compliance with the federal Clery Act.
- Conducts frequent Crime Prevention training sessions for all students, faculty, and staff members.
- Maintains, services, tests and inspects fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and alarm systems on a weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual basis.
- Conducts monthly inspections of all emergency telephones on campus.
- Provides vehicle unlocks and jumpstarts, as requested.
- Provides security escorts, as requested.
- Will document and record information from valuable equipment or items with either an engraver or an ultraviolet pen.
- Maintains a "Lost and Found" section.
