Otterbein offers the best of both worlds for our sociology students - a beautiful campus in the quiet suburb of Westerville, and the opportunities for study in the adjacent Columbus metropolitan area.
Access to a large city provides our students with opportunities to study the impact of race, ethnicity, population stratification, poverty, inequality, crime and criminal justice. Students also have outstanding access to a number of agencies and organizations in direct contact with the population of the students' interest of study.
Otterbein students have unique opportunities through internships. Through the Ventresca Family Fund, sociology majors can apply for support to help defray costs of an internship or off campus learning experience. The sociology faculty strongly encourage students to plan a rewarding experience and are prepared to help students create the opportunity that best fits their interests.
Otterbein has a long tradition of service learning and community involvement, providing many opportunities for the sociology student to interact with their population of interest. The Center for Community Engagement coordinates Otterbein's outreach efforts. Approximately 55 courses offered at Otterbein every year have service-learning requirements, and last year faculty, students, and staff donated over 6,000 hours to community causes.
Our travel abroad programs help students broaden their global perspective. Students can apply for programs in several countries, including Japan, England, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Zimbabwe.
Otterbein's student/faculty ratio of 14:1 and average class size of 20 ensures that you will get plenty of personal guidance and instruction. Want to learn more about Otterbein? See Fast Facts . Ready to apply? Go to Admission.
