From Where I Stand: Maddie Helps Women Stand Strong

When I lived in Honduras, this was the view of the path I walked between work and my first host family’s house. The smiling girl is one of my host family sisters. She was so sweet. But I wonder how she will feel about herself in the future—her sense of confidence and worth—based on the life she knows.

This path was one of the only places I felt safe walking alone as a woman in Honduras. The harassment on the streets as a woman was horrifying. Later I learned a friend was robbed along this same road.

My time in Honduras taught me about a kind of inequality I had only read about before.

It made me brave.
I realized I was lucky.
I could do anything.
I could create my own future and I could do something to help.

I want to understand people and why certain experiences make them act the way they do. After experiencing a form of injustice as a woman in Honduras, I knew I couldn’t just sit by and not try to make change. My studies as a double major in psychology and women’s, gender and sexuality studies are getting me ready to do that.

I want to help women know they have an inherent sense of worth and value that isn’t dependent upon their place or rank or economic status.  For now, I’m helping my friends have more confidence. And I’m co-leading an organization at Otterbein to help make meaningful change for understanding.

You can’t live on this planet without giving something back.

I plan to dedicate my life to helping women know that they can stand stronger, too.
