  • What is the Otterbein Annual Fund?

    The Otterbein Annual Fund is an essential source of unrestricted, current-use support for the university.  Throughout the year, the Annual Fund enables Otterbein’s leaders to seize important opportunities and meet a variety of pressing needs.  Gifts of all sizes bolster the collective strength of the Annual Fund. Through your contribution, you can join other donors in increasing the power of the Annual Fund and making a significant and immediate difference for the Otterbein University community.

  • What is the impact of the Otterbein Annual Fund on the University?

    Annual Fund gifts provide Otterbein with immediate, budget-relieving support that enables President Krendl and other campus leaders to invest resources in strategic priorities that are mission critical for Otterbein.  Investing in the Annual Fund will…

    • Provide students with scholarships and financial aid.
    • Allow Otterbein to recruit and keep world-class faculty.
    • Maintain Otterbein’s world-class liberal arts based curriculum.
    • Recruit promising Cardinal scholars whose lives are being changed by the mission and values of an Otterbein education.
    • Enhance the student extracurricular experience.
    • Continue to provide opportunities for transformative experiences in and out of the classroom.

  • What makes the Annual Fund unique?

    Gifts to the Annual Fund provide for unrestricted support and are fully utilized each year. In addition to the Annual Fund specifically, all gifts to Otterbein can be made on a yearly basis.  However, there are different kinds of gifts serving different purposes.  A restricted gift, for example, provides funding for a specific purpose chosen by the donor and cannot be used for anything else.  Gifts to the endowment are another type of gift that is invested to benefit Otterbein in perpetuity-however, only a portion of endowment earnings can be spent each year.  

  • How important is my participation?

    Many organizations and students use the percentage of alumni who make a gift to Otterbein each year as a measure of alumni satisfaction with the University and the degree of alumni commitment to Otterbein.  A gift to the Otterbein Annual Fund by an alumnus is a vote of support for Otterbein.  Some examples of how these figures are used include:

    • Otterbein’s rank among other colleges in “percent participation” makes up an important part of Otterbein’s total ranking in U.S. News & World Report.
    • Corporations and foundations use the percentage of alumni participation as a benchmark when evaluating colleges for grants.
    • Prospective Otterbein students use the percentage of alumni participation in their college selection process to determine if alumni are satisfied with their choice to attend Otterbein.
  • Is my gift tax deductible?

    Gifts made via cash, check, or credit card will entitle you to claim a charitable income tax deduction. Otterbein University has an IRS 501(c)(3) classification as an organization exempt from Federal income tax, and is a publicly supported organization as described in section 509(a)(1) of the Code.   • What is the Joanne VanSant Society?

    Your gift of $1,000 and above welcomes you into a special giving society in honor of Joanne VanSant’s legacy of leadership.  Dean Van began her career at Otterbein in 1948, serving as an instructor in the women’s physical education department and later as chair of the department from 1950-62. She paved the way for women leaders on campus. She served as the Dean of Women (1952-60; 1962-64), the Dean of Students (1964-68), and 25 years as the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students (1968-93) with an unwavering and unconditional commitment to students. In 2012 Otterbein established The Joanne VanSant Leadership Society in her memory. 

  • How is participation in the Otterbein Annual Fund tracked?

    Otterbein tracks gifts on the Otterbein fiscal year calendar, July 1 to June 30.  Any gift made online or postmarked by June 30 counts for this year.  

  • What are matching gifts?

    More than 1000 companies promote philanthropy by matching the gifts of employees and their families’ gifts. These programs allow you, the employee, to direct your organization's philanthropy to the benefit of Otterbein. If you or your spouse work for or have retired from a matching gift company, you might also be eligible to take advantage of this benefit and perhaps double or even triple your support to Otterbein University.

  • How does the Matching Gift program work?

    Each time you make a gift to Otterbein, remember to either include your company's matching gift form or call their 800 number. Your employer will then direct a donation to Otterbein as well. For example, if you give a $200 donation to the University, your employer may contribute a match ranging from 50% ($100) to 200% ($400) of your gift.  Unsure how your company runs its program?
