Our History
In the early 1900s at Otterbein College (then
University) Greek organizations were not allowed on campus. Despite this rule,
Otterbein students formed secret social organizations. Later when these
organizations were recognized by the college, administration stated they could not use
Greek symbols or names to identify themselves so other
"nick-names" were adopted. It was under these circumstances that
Theta Nu, known as the Greenwich Club, was founded in 1917. Five students
founded the Greenwich Club: Agnes Wright, Gladys Swigart, Elizabeth McCabe,
Helen Keller, and Virginia Burtner. They adopted scarlet and gold as the
sorority colors and the poppy as the flower.
The sorority took on the name of Theta Nu in
the early 1920s. Around 1928 the colors were changed to purple and white
and the flower was changed to the violet. The white tailed dear was adopted
as our mascot and the artist's palette was chosen as our symbol. Our motto
is "Artes Honorabit" meaning she shall honor the arts. Every
Greenwich Girl strives to master the many arts of living. Our pin is the
pearl triangle, representing the sisters who have gone before, friendship
to present members, and goals for the future.
