Leadership Opportunities

There are three ways be a leader in Residence Life:

  1. Hall Council
  2. Resident Student Association
  3. Residence Life Student Staff - Resident Assistant, Assistant Hall Director and Student Hall Director

Hall Council

Hall Council is a group of selected residents in each residence hall or complex who maintain and promote a community living environment through hall programs, evaluation of living quarters and policies, and by promoting hall pride.

Members of Hall Council:

  • Influence Residence Life decisions (policies, renovation projects)
  • Recognize hall members for achievements, birthdays, etc.
  • Plan community service events for the hall
  • Hold fundraisers to buy items for the hall
  • Sponsor contests among residents
  • Develop leadership skills by learning how to:
    • Run an effective meeting
    • Be a part of a team
    • Work with a budget
    • Motivate others
  • Plan social and educational programs

Look for more information about your hall's council in your hall or ask an RA.

Resident Student Association (RSA)

RSA's primary function is to provide a voice for students in residence life decision-making and to provide feedback on all aspects of residential student living environments. A secondary function of RSA is to serve as an overseeing, governing body for Hall Councils. RSA is designed to be an educational experience for those participating on the board. For those students engaged in planning and coordinating RSA activities, the experience is intended to foster and develop the qualities of responsibility, leadership, management, cooperation and collaboration.

Residence Life Student Staff

Resident Assistants (RAs), Assistant Hall Directors (AHDs) and Student Hall Directors (SHDs) all serve residential students by providing leadership in the residence halls, planning community building activities, mediating roommate issues and providing assistance understanding and following college policies.

Residence life student staff members gain invaluable leadership, communication, team building and conflict resolution skills through their positions.

Students interested in joining the Residence Life staff are strongly encouraged to apply for positions for the upcoming school year.
