Andrew Ina employs common symbols placed in unorthodox arrangements to create contradictions on the surface of his paintings. By subverting their intended function, the symbols are reduced to their formal elements, becoming patterns that are familiar, but devoid of their original meaning. The work stems from his struggle to reconcile the polarizing effects of media on our day-to-day lives. In Unintended Consequences, the artist’s recent work focuses on the Caution sign in its various forms, as a response to the current nonsensical social and political climate. The art becomes a visual metaphor for society’s recent tendency to experience familiar and recognizable warning signs that should engender caution, but to ignore their import. Desensitizing in their ubiquity, the ‘caution signs’ become meaningless textures, appearances that obscure and distract. Learn more about Andrew Ina here.
