Protect the Nest: COVID-19 Response at Otterbein
(Archived July 21, 2021)

As we look forward to “new normal” operations next fall semester, we are reflecting on this academic year and want to thank our campus community for making good choices, being patient, and modeling the Cardinal Community Responsibilities. YOU are the reason we were able to finish the 2020-21 academic year together, in person. THANK YOU for making responsible choices!

The safety of students, faculty, staff, and the community-at-large remains Otterbein’s top priority as we plan for fall semester. While we understand that the pandemic has fundamentally changed what “normal” means for all of us in the future, we are committed to providing a robust in-person experience for everyone in our community. That experience includes residence life, campus activities, classes, and the many other things that make campus life so special.

Our Otterbein COVID-19 advisory team was established in mid-May of 2020 to monitor, advise, and guide the campus safely through the changing circumstances created by the pandemic. The team continues to develop protocols for students, faculty, and staff to keep campus safe for classes and operations in alignment with directives and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), State of Ohio Department of Health’s Responsible Restart Ohio: Higher Education Minimum Operating Standards and Recommended Best Practices, Franklin County Public Health, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and OhioHealth.

The guidelines developed are specific to instructional, work, residential, and social spaces. We remain responsive to public health orders and vigilant and committed to the safety and wellness of our Cardinal Community. Change in COVID-19 protocol on campus

Otterbein has adopted the Ohio Department of Health and CDC COVID-19 guidance for students, employees, and visitors to campus. This means we will no longer require fully vaccinated people to wear facial coverings or socially distance. At this time, we will require unvaccinated people to wear facial coverings and practice social distancing. We still require all people (vaccinated or unvaccinated) newsto conduct their daily self-evaluations prior to coming to campus.

COVID-19 Vaccine appointments are available at these locations:

Additional locations can be found at or

Otterbein will also be hosting vaccination opportunities on campus. Those dates will be announced at a later time.

Cardinal Community Responsibilities

By honoring these Cardinal Community Responsibilities, we can help take care of ourselves, our classmates and colleagues, and our greater Otterbein Community. Otterbein is asking students and colleagues alike to make a commitment to these important responsibilities so we can stay healthy, stay strong and stay together.

Otterbein University’s Return to Campus Plans have been developed in consultation with Franklin County Public Health and OhioHealth (Otterbein’s campus healthcare provider) and adhere to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Ohio Department of Health.
