John Newman ’77 and his daughter, Ellie Newman ’23, aren’t like other people — they published a children’s book while staying safe at home. The product of their collaboration, “Baby Polar Bear and The Mean Germ,” is a children's book that explains pandemic-related safety measures in a colorful, fun, and kid-friendly way. “We tried to incorporate the information of the times along with things that little kids would like and that would stick with them. The situation…

Here a few areas that continue to operate over break and how they support the Cardinal Community. News - December 14, 2020
By Madelyn Nelson ’23 Thirty-two Otterbein students conducted semester-long service projects as part of an Integrative Studies course this fall. The Interrogating Social Inequality projects ranged from more traditional projects like volunteering, fundraising, and collecting items to unique ones like creating infographics and sitting on national boards to combat a social inequality in the community. The students served 24 different organizations in Ohio and found creative ways to give back during the pandemic. Students enrolled in INST 2006 chose a social inequality issue and organization, created a plan to make an impact and executed it throughout the semester. After the service projects were complete, students identified a personal perspective shift, which describes how they feel about the social…

Art of Nursing on Display with Final Otterbein Class Project

News - December 2, 2020
This fall, Nursing Instructor Christine Zamaripa was challenged with adapting labs and lectures for the Fundamentals of Nursing class, which was presented fully online. She was worried about losing the connectivity with students that in-person instruction creates, so she devised a way for students to do something a little different for their final project that incorporated both the science and the “art” of nursing.   Rather than the traditional paper, the final project was to create an artifact — a visual representation of what being a professional nurse means to…
