Otterbein READY: Because Career Readiness Isn’t Optional

It’s tough out there! Employers are looking for graduates who can communicate, collaborate, lead, and adapt easily to professional challenges.
Classroom learning in a chosen major isn’t enough to be ready for life after college, and career readiness isn’t optional. That’s why Otterbein developed the READY Program.
Otterbein READY is a comprehensive career and professional development program integrated into the student experience from the first year through graduation. Rather than waiting until senior year to focus on careers, students participate in a structured progression that connects personal growth, academic learning, professional exploration, and real-world experience throughout their college journey.
Each year focuses on a different stage of development:
- Year One: Self-discovery, strengths, interests, and purpose
- Years Two and Three: Professional networking, mentorship, experiential learning, and career exploration
- Year Four: Reflection, transition planning, and readiness for careers, graduate school, or other post-graduate opportunities
READY Day: Sept. 23, 2026
A signature component of the program is READY Day, an annual, required campus-wide conference that brings together students, alumni, employers, graduate schools, and community partners. READY Day is so important that Otterbein cancels classes for the entire day so every student can participate.
The event features workshops, seminars, networking opportunities, and career exploration experiences tailored to each stage of a student’s development while providing valuable connections with professionals across a variety of industries.
READY Day offers something different for each year of study:
- First-Year Students: The focus is on learning about yourself, your major, and how to prepare for your entire Otterbein experience.
- Sophomores and Juniors: The focus is on planning your immersive experiences, exploring internship and professional opportunities with business and community partners, and developing professional skills in your area of interest.
- Seniors: The focus is on planning for life post-Otterbein, making meaningful connections with your life and career goals, and refining your professional etiquette and skills.
The inaugural READY Day was held in 2025, and the planning team learned a lot from student feedback! The READY Day 2026 is going to be bigger and better, offering a wider range of topics and giving students more opportunities to attend the sessions that interest them most.
