Assistant Professor
Department of Philosophy & Religion
Abigail Kulisz is a scholar of religion with a specialization in medieval Christianity and Islam. Her research focuses on the shared scriptural, literary, and creative imagination between Christians and Muslims in the seventh to tenth centuries, as well as the ongoing resonances of the medieval religious world in the present day. She is particularly interested in psychoanalytic theory as a significant site of inquiry for articulations of psychic and textual encounters, both past and present.
Her current research project reads Christian writings about Islam psychoanalytically with attention to the unconscious as a textual force. She is working on a second project that re-considers the legacy of Sigmund Freud in the study of religion, namely through his writings on the Apostle Paul. Additionally, she is interested in teaching and pedagogies that draw upon the study of religion as a mode of meaning-making and creative expression.
