The Clements Recreation and Fitness Center

The Clements Recreation & Fitness Center includes a 70,000 square-foot fieldhouse holding an indoor track, four batting cages, dropdown basketball hoops and four courts capable of hosting many sports/activities.

In addition to track and field meets, the space is used for varsity tennis competition and by multiple other programs during the winter months. It connects to the Rike Center and also serves as the venue for commencement.

The first level boasts state-of-the-art cardio and weightlifting machines, along with a 5,000 square-foot athletic training facility. The Freeman Athletic Training Center, located on the first floor of Clements just inside the front doors, is named in honor of the late Dr. Bill Freeman known by many as “Doc Freeman.” The legendary Hall of Famer served as team/head physician for many years after initially graduating from Otterbein in 1957, providing consulting services to athletic trainers and forming countless relationships.

The Freeman Athletic Training Center is a facility that provides healthcare services to Otterbein student-athletes. It is staffed by certified athletic trainers who are responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

The Freeman Athletic Training Center is equipped with a variety of equipment and supplies that are used to provide treatment for athletic injuries. This equipment includes: 12 Treatment tables, 10 Taping tables, Ice, Heat packs, 2 Ultrasound machines, 3 Electrical stimulation machines, Stationary Bike, Shuttle, Slide Board, Plyoboxes, Blaze Pods and other various Exercise equipment (physioballs, medicine balls, dumbbells, therabands,foam rollers, etc.)

Our Athletic trainers use a variety of techniques to treat athletic injuries. These techniques may include: Taping, Bracing, Ice therapy, Heat therapy, Electrical stimulation, Ultrasound therapy, Exercise therapy.

The Freeman Athletic Training Center is an important resource of the healthcare team used to treat our student-athletes. The Freeman Athletic Training Center provides a safe and supportive environment where our student-athletes can receive the care they need to recover from injuries and return to their sport.

The area has two entrances, connecting itself to both the Roush Hall of Champions along with the indoor fieldhouse.

Most of the athletic department staff occupies the second floor of the building, complete with more offices, bleachers that overlook the indoor fieldhouse, a classroom and full lounge area.

The Clements Center features state-of-the-art Cybex weightlifting equipment and Star-Trac cardiovascular equipment, giving fitness seekers an opportunity to meet their workout needs on a vast array of equipment. (Remove the part about the tv’s)

The Rike Center

Built in 1974, the Rike Center houses multiple athletic facilities in addition to other notable areas. The domed roof encloses an intercollegiate hardwood floor with seating for just under 3,000 fans that have taken in memorable basketball, volleyball, wrestling and other special events over the years. The venue has played host to NCAA runs for men’s basketball (including a 2002 national championship season), multiple conference titles in volleyball and the resurrection of men’s wrestling and soon to be women’s wrestling program.

Conventional classrooms and academic/meeting spaces are located throughout, used by various programs in addition to the Department of Health and Sports Sciences. The “O” Club weight room, opened and dedicated in the Spring of 2008, fitness room and multiple locker rooms for varsity teams are located across the first floor, while offices for athletic staff are scattered throughout.

A pair of floating hardwood courts were added to the back of The Rike Center in 2014 and serve as additional volleyball and basketball courts as well as practice space for the men’s wrestling team.

Monday – Thursday: 7:00am – 10:00pm
Friday: 7:00am – 7:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am – 7:00pm
Sunday: 12:00pm – 10:00pm
Subject to change during summer months and holidays

Entry Rules

All current Cardinal Card holders may use free of charge the Clements Recreation & Fitness Center and Rike Center. Entrance to both the Clements and Rike Centers is gained by swiping a Cardinal Card at the Clements Recreation Center front desk followed by admittance by the Recreation Assistant on duty. Admission may be denied if you do not have your Cardinal Card.

Guest Policy

Any member of the Otterbein community who has an active Cardinal Card may bring one “non-family” guest into the Clements Recreation & Fitness Center or two family-members. The guests must show their ID. The guest(s) will be registered under the card holder and is expected to abide by the same rules and regulations. The card holder must be present with his or her guest at all times.
