Department of Equine Science

Julia Spatt is an Otterbein alumni who graduated in 2014 with her degree in Equine Business Management and participated on all three equestrian teams as a student. She grew up involved in the United States Pony Club and competed in a variety of disciplines before discovering three day eventing – since then she has never looked back!

Julia has successfully competed through the Intermediate level and competed several horses at the FEI CCI* level. She competed at the North American Junior & Young Rider Championships in 2010 as a junior, where she placed 9th individually. She has also competed at the American Eventing Championships at a variety of levels five times. In 2009 and 2018 she was Champion of the division she was competing in (Training Junior & Preliminary Amateur) and has been ranked on the USEA National Leaderboard multiple times. She is a graduate ‘traditional-A’ rated Pony Club member who remains active with the organization. Julia specializes in producing young horses and bringing them up through the levels of eventing.

As an equestrian, Julia continues to compete her personal horse and works to meet her competitive riding goals and to continue her education as a rider and a coach. She has spent time working for professionals in the industry including Jan Byyny and Grant Schneidman and was head groom and barn manager of Jacob Fletcher’s eventing program, 5o1 Sport Horses for three years. Julia has had the privilege of riding with top professionals like Phillip Dutton, David & Karen O’Connor, Mike Huber, James Burtwell and John Staples.

As a coach, Julia likes to work one on one with her students to help them achieve their personal goals with their horses, no matter at what level. Julia is the eventing team coach and coaches riders from all teams at the Otterbein facility.
