Alfred Gilmour, Class of 1951

Alfred ‘Al’ Gilmour ’51 died May 21, 2011. Al was born and raised in Jeanette, PA and served on the USS San Pedro during World War II. In 1952, Al received his B.A. from Otterbein College where he was in the Eta Phi Mu (Jonda) fraternity, WOBN Radio, Student Government/Senate, band, and played tennis.

In 1953, he met MaryAnn Lorentz and they were married on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. In 1967, Al and MaryAnn moved to Tiburon, CA after Al accepted a position at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, where he worked from 1968 through 1990. During his tenure Al served as Director, and Assistant Dean of Development and Public Relations, and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. After his retirement, Al and MaryAnn moved to Santa Rosa in 1994, where he joined the Oakmont Chapter of Kiwanis and was instrumental in fundraising for numerous local causes. In 2010, Al was bestowed an honorary Doctorate degree in Humane Letters from Olivet College.

Al was preceded in death by his wife MaryAnn. Survived by his children; Laura Gilmour and Teresa (Kevin) Dix. Grandchildren; Janelle (Kenneth) Dent and Samantha Dix; and great grandfather of Asia’Marie Brown. Al is also survived by brother Robert Gilmour ’50 and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
