Carolyn Hooper Hovik ’53 died September 11, 2022. She was born on October 26, 1931, to the late Thelma and Albert Hooper ‘26.
Carolyn graduated from Coffee High School in 1949. Carolyn attended Otterbein College and graduated in 1953, with a degree in elementary education. In her time at Otterbein, she was apart of the choir program along with the Tau Delta (Deltas) sorority.

Carolyn was hired by the Huntsville City Schools beginning a career of teaching where she would teach in five of the city’s elementary schools before retiring in 1989. While at Jone’s Valley School, Carolyn installed the pilot program which established kindergarten schooling in the Huntsville City School system.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Hovik; son, William Alan “Bill” Hovik; and aunts Edna Hooper Schutz ’21 and Elsie Hooper Hoffman ’21.
Carolyn is survived by her brother, Roger Hooper; grandchildren, Melody Rae Young and Ryan Hovik; great-grandson, Robert Alan Young; and daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Hovik and her son, John Canaan Emmons.
