Charlayne Huggins Phillips, Class of 1953

Charlayne Huggins Phillips ’53 died March 24, 2022. ‘Charlie’ was born Nov. 8, 1930 to the late Georgia and Glen Huggins in Dayton, OH where she lived in the area all her life. She attended Otterbein University, graduating with a BSE in science education. Charlie was employed at Columbus Public School System as an elementary teacher. While at Otterbein, Charlie was a member of the Epsilon Kappa Tau (Arbutus) sorority and later attended several June Bug Jamboree’s in the Dayton area. She met her late husband Michael ‘Doc’ Phillips ’53 at Otterbein and they worked side by side to complete his medical school at Ohio State University. Charlie was active in many charitable and religious organizations, being a devoted member of the Montgomery County Medical Society Alliance, The College Women’s Club, and the gourmet Group North. She deeply cared for animals and was a regular donor to the Humane Society. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Glendine and her son Todd. She is survived by her two son’s Kent and Scott; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
