Duane H. Smith, Class of 1954

Duane H. Smith ‘54 died on Oct. 4, 2018. Duane was born on July 18, 1933 Ohio to Howard E. Smith and Mary Caroline Schulte Smith. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Otterbein (’54) and later attained his doctoral degree (MD) at University of Cincinnati (’58). While Duane never kept count, he believed through his practice that he delivered at least 20,000 babies calculated on an average of 25 a month, which he admitted was a conservative estimate. During his time at Otterbein, Duane was a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member. He was also a veteran of the United States Army having served his country in the Vietnam War.

Duane is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Russell Smith; and a sister, Marian Smith Winner. He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Smith Sloop and Lynda Carol Smith; two sons, Stephen Smith and Scott Smith; and eleven grandchildren.
