John Hoover ’51 died Jan. 6, 2020. He was born in Columbus, Ohio to the late Alston and Phoebe Hoover on Oct. 25, 1927.
John graduated from Orange Township High School in 1945, served in the U.S. Army, and then graduated from Otterbein in 1951 as an adult student with a degree in history.
He then continued his education for ministry at the Winebrenner Theological Seminary, receiving his Master of Divinity. John went on to pastor 6 churches: Green Springs E.U.B., Salem E.U.B. & Belle Vernon E.U.B., Hoytville E.U.B., Trinity United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky, and Delphos Trinity United Methodist Church. His 41 years of ministry also included some interim pastoral positions after his retirement.
John is survived by his children Larry Hoover, Dr. Stephen Hoover ’74, Rev. Thomas Hoover ’76, Kathleen Sumner ’79, Linda Barth, and Peggy England, 17 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren, and his brother Herbert Hoover. John was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, brothers, Abe and Lowell, and sisters, Margaret Hull and Janet Casey, and a daughter in law, Jane Hoover.
