Karen Hillyard Schein, Class of 1968

Karen Hillyard Schein ’68 died Jan. 11, 2019. She was born on Aug. 1, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of the late Hubert and Elizabeth (Zalecky) Hillyard. She was a graduate of Willoughby South High School, Otterbein College with a degree in Elementary Education, and Ohio State University with a master’s degree in Education. During her time at Otterbein, Karen met her husband and fellow Otterbein alumnus, David B. Schein ’70.

Karen taught first grade for 30 years at Finland Elementary School in South-Western City Schools. She served many years on curriculum development committees and was a President of the PTA. She was a tole painter and an active member of the Heart of Ohio Tole. Karen is preceded in death by her parents and father-in-law, Paul Schein. She is survived by her husband, David B. Schein ‘70; siblings, Charles Hillyard, David Janosko, Patricia Williams, Mary Beth Allison; mother-in-law, Mary Alice Schein; sisters-in-law Patty Weiland, Judy Skidmore, Nancy Hurley and numerous nieces and nephews.
