Sara Lawton Winston, Class of 1954

Sara Jane Lawton Winston ’54 died April 26, 2020. Sara was born in 1933 in Lodi, Ohio, to William and Adelaide Lawton. Sara was valedictorian of Lodi High School and went on to graduate second in her class from Otterbein College in three years. She was involved in the Tau Epsilon Mu (Talisman) sorority and earned a teaching degree while she worked.

Sara worked tirelessly as an early director of the Weekday Kindergarten at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church. At BDRPC, she served in many roles, including elder and deacon. After her time at the preschool, Sara moved on to Brevard Elementary where she taught for more than 20 years. She was a gifted teacher and once received a personal commendation from the president for her class having the highest reading and math scores in the country.
Sara was honored to be a member of the Waightstill-Avery Chapter of the DAR and an original member of the Transylvania County Delta Kappa Gamma.

Sara was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Miller ’52.
She is survived by her children Greg (Guaciara) Winston, John (Amy) Winston, Amy Warner (Robert) and grandchildren, Garet, Annie, and Parker Winston, Taylor Warner Risser (Phillip) and Winston Warner.
Sara is also survived by her sisters and brother, Martha Watkins ’57 (Bill), Paul Lawton (Sue), Maryanna Harley, and Glenn’s sister, Patricia Grosvenor, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
