Otterbein Actuarial Club

Otterbein Actuarial Club organizes activities regularly. We hold group study sessions preparing for the professional actuarial exams. We invite actuarial practitioners to the club to talk about the types of work and projects they undertake. We organize informational sessions for summer internship and full time jobs. All actuarial science majors are automatically enrolled as members of the Otterbein Actuarial Club.

Kayne Kirby is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and has over 17 years of experience in risk management, product management, and actuarial roles in the insurance industry.

Shiqi Wang (Otterbein Alumna 2005)
Sr. Product Manager at Nationwide Insurance

Sr. Product Manager Sabrina Wang graduated from Otterbein University with a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science in 2006. After initially working in Commercial Lines Pricing, she moved into Product Management roles across Commercial and Personal Lines. In 2015, she earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. Sabrina has spent most of her career in Product, and currently manages Property and Casualty insurance for the states of Ohio and West Virginia.

Lindsey Halsey, ACAS (Otterbein Alumna 2006)
VP Product Management at State Auto Insurance Companies

Lindsey started her career at Mercer Human Resources Consulting in 2005 as a pension actuarial analyst, then transitioned into her Property & Casualty career at State Auto in 2010 on the personal insurance pricing team. While on the pricing team, she gained experience in auto, home, and larger scale CW projects. In 2015, she moved into her first managerial role – taking responsibility over the personal auto pricing team of 8 analysts — “We simultaneously fixed a profitability issue in our 600M legacy book and created a new pricing model for our new rating platform.” During that time, she also achieved ACAS. Most recently in 2019, she moved into Product and is currently the owner of the entire Personal Auto product line.

Alex Moorehead, CPCU, MSL, AIAF (Otterbein Alumni 2013)
PL Product Manager at Grange Insurance

Alex is currently a Personal Lines Product Manager at Grange Insurance where he manages multiple lines of business and multiple states. Prior to Grange, Alex spent seven years at Nationwide in a variety of product and actuarial roles. He a graduate from Otterbein University with a degree in Actuarial Science and since has gone on to obtain two Master’s degrees, one in Organizational Leadership and the other an MBA. He has also acquired his CPCU and AIAF designations. Alex believes in continually learning and making sure to stay up to date on trends, the market, and competition as these are key to success in any industry. Alex’s favorite quote is “There is no such thing as luck. Luck equals opportunity plus preparedness”.

Andy Hufford, ACAS (Otterbein Alumni 2014)
Actuarial Manager at State Auto Insurance

Andy started his actuarial internship in the summer of 2013 with State Auto Insurance Companies. He was hired upon graduation and first worked for State Auto as a Homeowner Pricing Actuarial Analyst. Andy now works as the Actuarial Manager for the Farm and Ranch product line.
Andy, 2014, graduated from Otterbein University with a degree in Actuarial Science. He is the CAS University Liaison for Otterbein and an Assistant Coach for the Men’s Lacrosse program.

Alexisduch

Alexis Duch, ASA (Otterbein Alumna 2016)
Sr. Actuarial Analyst at Nationwide Financial

Alexis is currently in the Actuarial rotation program at Nationwide Financial. She has already completed rotations in Annuity Implementation, Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA) Pricing, and the Model Development Team. In June 2020 she will rotate to the Life Financial Reporting and In Force Management Team. During these rotations Alexis has gained product knowledge, intuition for how model results should move based on various changes made to the models, learned how to manage/ mitigate risk, and the best way to share her findings with a non-Actuarial audience. All of this was done using Milliman MG-ALFA or GGY AXIS modeling platforms. She hopes to attain her ASA in her next rotation and looks forward to starting a new role and being pushed out of her comfort-zone again to grow as an Actuary and a people leader.

Phillip Kall, ACAS (Otterbein Alumni 2016)
Actuarial Analyst at Cincinnati Financial

Phillip currently works in Risk Analytics at the Cincinnati Insurance Company. His work focuses on evaluating the total risk the company faces each year particularly the investment and underwriting risks.

Caleb graduated from Otterbein University in 2017 with a degree in Actuarial Science. He is currently employed by Ohio Mutual Insurance Group as an Actuarial Analyst for Commercial Lines.

Zhen Huang

Zhen Huang, Ph.D., ASA (Retired Professor 2023)

Dr. Zhen Huang is a distinguished academic and actuarial professional who has made significant contributions to the field of actuarial science. He served as the Professor and Director of the Actuarial Science Program in the Department of Mathematics & Actuarial Science at Otterbein University from 1991 to 2023, leaving a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues.

With a strong educational background, Dr. Huang earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1991. Prior to that, he completed his M.S. in Actuarial Science and M.S. in Mathematics, also at the University of Iowa, in 1989 and 1987, respectively. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Fujian Normal University in 1982.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Huang demonstrated a passion for research and creative work, particularly in the area of Predictive Modeling and Risk Management. His expertise in these domains contributed to advancements in actuarial science, fostering a deeper understanding of risk assessment and management in various industries.

In recognition of his vast knowledge and dedication to the field, Dr. Huang was appointed as an external advisor for the Actuarial Science Club, where he shared his insights and mentored aspiring actuarial professionals. His guidance and mentorship undoubtedly inspired countless students to pursue successful careers in the actuarial profession.

As he embarks on a well-deserved retirement, Dr. Huang leaves behind a legacy of excellence in actuarial education and research. His impact will continue to resonate within the actuarial community for years to come.
