Otterbein Course Puts Students to Work Serving the Common Good

Serving the common good is a foundational aspect of the Otterbein experience, both in and out of the classroom. With that in mind, two Department of Communication faculty members teamed up to teach an in Integrative Studies (INST) course combining service-learning and storytelling.   INST 3010: Telling Community Stories for the Common Good explored the relationship between journalists and communities, the concept of civic journalism, and how to promote a community and “restore it,” using techniques common to public relations. The class was taught by senior communication instructors Michael Moon and Denise Shively.  …

Otterbein Allied Health Professionals Make Impact during Pandemic

By Madelyn Nelson ’23  Derek Landes ’12 is fighting on the front lines of COVID-19 every day. Landes graduated from Otterbein with a degree in Allied Health, and is now one of the healthcare workers who have been working for months to fight the pandemic.   Landes works as an emergency room physician assistant for Mount Carmel Health System, a job that is more important now than ever before.  Dr. Shelley Payne, who started and oversees the Allied Health Program at Otterbein, says that it combines a foundation in the basic sciences and applied human anatomy and serves…

Otterbein Athletics to Return Following 10-Month Absence

Following more than 10 months of uncertainty and time away from competition due to the ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic, Otterbein Athletics will finally be returning to varsity competition this weekend!  Otterbein Women's Basketball Both basketball teams, both track and field teams, and the wrestling program have been practicing on campus and are now being tested regularly in compliance with the NCAA guidelines. Otterbein Joins with Westerville Community to Launch Racial Equity Organization

Community members and organizations, including Otterbein University and other key stakeholders in the greater Westerville area, have come together to commit to doing the important work necessary to defeat racism in the community in response to the tragic events of police brutality in 2020.  Along with incidents across the country, two recent police shootings of unarmed Black men in central Ohio have brought the focus on racism in policing closer to home.   When Otterbein senior Desmond Fernandez organized his first Black Lives Matters march in Westerville on June 3, 2020, he expected about 50 people, but approximately 1,000 members of the greater Westerville community attended.  …

Otterbein Student Receives Community Honor at MLK Celebration

Desmond Fernandez, a senior BFA acting major at Otterbein, was honored with the Alston Award at Leadership Westerville’s 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan. 18, 2021. The award recognizes a member of the Westerville community that has embodied and lived out the ideals of Dr. King.   Fernandez grew up in Westerville and attended Westerville City Schools before enrolling at Otterbein. His activism grew as a student until the summer of 2020, when he stepped up to organize protests and celebrations supporting Black Lives Matter.   “I’ve been a part of this community…

Class of 2020 Artists Honored in Senior Exhibition

By Madelyn Nelson ’23 Senior artists from the Class of 2020 will finally have a chance to share their art with “The Forgotten Class: A 2020 Senior Art Exhibition,” running from Jan. 19-Feb. 12 in the Miller Gallery in the Art and Communication Building, 33 Collegeview Road, Westerville. The gallery is open from 8-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 1-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
